We’ve been talking a lot about wellness the last few weeks. This is a topic that is always on my mind. Whether it’s when I look in the mirror and wish for a couple more of these baby pounds to fall off or when I write out my grocery list for the week, I’m hoping to be a healthier person. I want to look my best and feel my best all of the time so that I can do my best in everything in my life. It’s very important to me, as I imagine it is very important to you.
Unfortunately, if I don’t watch my attitude I can really take this to the extreme. It’s good to want to be healthier, slimmer, more toned, hydrated and so on, but it is just as important to have a healthy mindset. What I mean by this is having a positive outlook on yourself and your health goals. It can be easy to become motivated for the wrong reasons and to therefore not make any real progress.
For example, if I want to loose 20 pounds so badly that all I do is think about how frustrated I am or how I shouldn’t eat anymore or that I need to work out for several hours each day I’m just going to be beating myself up instead of building myself up. The way we think can really change our whole body for better or for worse. When I work out, if I am being negative about myself I hate the workout. On the other hand, when I am positive I enjoy the workout and feel better about myself and my health afterward. I would much prefer that outcome, especially when I am giving valuable time to exercise.
So how do you know if you are having a healthy mindset? I would encourage you to pay attention to how your thoughts sound. Are you constantly bashing yourself for what you eat or how you look? If so, stop. Make changes in your diet or exercise plan so that you can truly feel good about what you are doing and stick with it. You give energy to being negative that you could be giving to becoming healthier. Do you feel negative pressure to be a certain way? If so, lighten up. Find ways to have positive pressures that help you instead of hurt you. No beach babe body is worth hating yourself to obtain. Instead, be happy about who you are and where you are heading with your health goals. Be thankful that you are in a position to improve yourself every day and go ahead and make those improvements. One positive thought at a time.
