How do I add my child? Do I need to insure my step children?
Adding a child to your plan is different now thanks to the Affordable Care Act. To add anyone to your policy you have to have what is called a qualifying event (see previous blog for details). If you have a qualifying event such as birth of a new child or loss of coverage, than adding a child will depend on your situation. If you went through healthcare.gov for your policy we need to go through your application and update this information, which can effect your subsidy and in turn effect the cost of your premium. If you went directly with a carrier than it is as simple as signing a piece of paper and accepting the new rate.
Enrolling step children is the same process as enrolling a natural child. You do not have to have health insurance for your step children unless it is mandated through a divorce decree.
